Power Drive Base

What is a power drive base?

The power drive base is what moves the power wheelchair. These bases have direct drive motors that provide more power than previous power wheelchairs to promote mobility within the chair. Most power-base chairs have a smaller diameter for the base, but a larger and wider tire to create a larger surface area in contact with the ground, for better traction and stability.

There are three different types of power drive bases:

  1. Front Wheel drive base,
  2. Center Wheel drive base, and
  3. Rear Wheel drive base.

The varying drive bases assist individuals in mobility around their setting and environment. Each drive base works best in a certain setting, but all will power a wheelchair to promote mobility.

NOTE:

The environment in which a person uses a chair and the activity level of the person are the main factors to consider when choosing the appropriate base.

Power wheelchair bases run on a battery

There are two types of batteries. They are either rechargeable (a nickel cadmium) or disposable (alkaline or zinc chloride). Rechargeable batteries are a little more expensive, but are more economical over time than disposable batteries. Disposable batteries can differ as well in either an alkaline type or a zinc chloride type. The alkaline disposable batteries last longer than zinc chloride or rechargeable batteries, but they cost more than zinc chloride disposable batteries. (Angelo, 1997, p. 86).

In general if one is to choose a drive system that fits them best …..

Recommended for:

Front-wheel drive systems are best for:

  • Individuals who do not need the tightest turning and still want to move at relatively fast speeds.
  • Individuals who will encounter a lot of uneven, rocky or hilly terrain.

Center wheel drive systems are best for:

  • Individuals living in environments where there are tight hallways, such as residential facilities, setting with multiple users of wheelchairs moving around in close quarters.
  • Individuals who move around in small areas (e.g., tight elevators, small bathrooms, etc.).

Rear-wheel drive bases are best for:

  • Individuals who desire to travel at faster speeds.
