Benefits:
- This drive system has the shortest turning radius making it beneficial for maneuvering in tight spaces.
- Wheel turning radius is about 24-26” (Johnson Taylor, n.d.)
- The center wheel drive system has both front and rear casters, which are smaller wheels that promote sharp turning and resist tipping forwards or backwards
- This drive base is best for use in the home or a residential living facility where moving around corners and in hallways occurs frequently.
Limitations:
- The wheelchair may rock forward slightly if the driver stops abruptly, but with practice, this is rarely a concern.
- Mid-wheel drive bases make maneuvering over a curb challenging (Kreutz & Johnson Taylor, 2002, p.328)
Recommended for:
- Individuals living in environments where there are tight hallways, such as residential facilities, setting with multiple users of wheelchairs moving around in close quarters.
- Individuals who move around in small areas (e.g., tight elevators, small bathrooms, etc.).
