Rear Wheel

Benefits:

  • These chairs are great for rough terrain because they are typically the most stable.
  • These chairs move faster than other wheelchairs, but all wheelchairs will have input devices that can be adjusted for appropriate speeds for each person.
  • Some rear-wheel systems have adjustable rear wheels to adapt to the necessary weight distribution of the person in the chair (Kreutz & Johnson Taylor, 2002, p.327)

Limitation:

  • Rear-wheel drive systems have the worst turning radius and are often larger and bulkier wheelchairs
    • Wheel turning radius of about 33” or more (Johnson Taylor, n.d.)
    • In hilly terrain the chair may tip back a little because all of the weight is in the back

Recommended for:

  • Individuals who desire to travel at faster speeds.
