Lateral Trunk Supports

Lateral trunk supports are side supports that mount to the back posts of the wheelchair to provide stability to a wheelchair user. Usually the supports are placed on both sides of the user to keep the individual in an upright position with proper posture, but sometimes only one support is needed on one side. The size and length, shape, and also the number of supports all depend on the person’s trunk stability. (United Spinal Association, 2012).

Size & Length

Trunk supports come in multiple sizes and lengths. The size & length of the support depends on the size of the individual’s body. For example if the wheelchair user has a larger stomach area, then the support would need to be placed low on their side

support is placed low on the side of the wheelchair user and the user has a larger stomach, then a larger and longer trunk support will be needed to cover more area and support more (United Spinal Association, 2012).

Shape

The shape of a trunk support is important for comfort. Lateral supports either have a rectangular shape or a shorter square shape. The difference between these two options

relates primarily to comfort for the individual. Again, persons that weigh more will most likely need a longer rectangular shape, but the shape has to be comfortable for the user (United Spinal Association, 2012).

Number of Supports

The number of supports and what sides they are on depend on the trunk muscles of the person using the wheelchair. If the individual has strong trunk muscles on one side then it is most likely that only one lateral support will be needed on the affected, weaker side. However if the wheelchair user is frequently sitting with poor posture and positioning, then it may be improved by supporting both sides with lateral supports. Typically two parallel lateral supports work best to promote proper body positioning (United Spinal Association, 2012).

Benefits:

  • Aid in trunk stability and support
  • Improve balance and posture
  • Prevent poor posture and deformities
  • Keep the body in a functional position
  • Enable to person using the  wheelchair to sit straight, improving his/her visual field and appearance

Limitations:

  • Can be ineffective if they are placed too low May add too much pressure to the area under the arm affecting nerve pathways, skin tissue, and functional arm and shoulder movement if placed too high

Recommended For:

  • Individuals with low muscle tone in the trunk
  • Individuals who benefit from external support
